Bath Roller Derby Girls vs Bourne Bombshells 13th October 2013

On Sunday 13th October Michelle (Rolls-Moyse) & Kimi Krusher had the opportunity to Help our Sisters from another mother team Bath Roller Derby Girls play the Bourne Bombshells.

Of course we jumped at the chance brought our Mr. men Happy T-Shirts, abducted So Solid Sue to cheer us on, who ended up NSOing, Feeling a bit bruised and battered after playing Cornwall the day before but full of excitement.

After a few problems with the Sat Nav normal for a Screamers Road Trip off we went meeting the Bath Girls at the Bristol Venue of merchant sports academy.

WOW! Is all I’m going to say, Roller Derby and Leopard print our team captain of the Scream Team would have died and gone to haven, The Bourne Bombshells team kit as you can see from the photos is amazing, really nice ladies but I’m not going to lie I was a little scared!

After a Team Talk, whistle blew for the first Jam BOOM BOOM BOOM as I expected Hard Hitters, Solid walls.

Closed Scrim DCS Screamers vs Cornwall CRD 12th September 2013

Screamers take on Cornwall Roller Derby Girls

Cornwall Roller Derby – 12th October 2012

In the summer the Screamers visited the bubble dome in Penzance for a training Session and Scrim with some of the Rapscallions and the Cornwall Roller Derby ladies and so now it was time for the ladies to cross the border and visit Devon.

After a little warm up, we went straight into a Closed door Scrim and oh my word, it was great fun. The nerves soon melted away as we stood on the track for the first time, there was nothing else in our minds, apart from “don’t let their jammer score points” and with some brilliant team work, there were a number of times when we held her back so she couldn’t. There was brilliant jamming from both teams and the amazing blocking was preventing those nimble little jammers from scoring hundreds and hundreds of points. There was jammer on jammer action on the jammer line, jammer on jammer action around the track and some perfectly timed positional blocking from all the ladies on track.
The hour of skating seemed to fly by and the final score reflected just how close the “Battle of the Cream Teas” was. We may have lost but was the smallest point differential to date and the ladies from Cornwall Roller Derby we’re pleasantly surprised at how far we’d come since our first meeting in August, which was the greatest compliment for us as we had been training hard since then.
Wetherspoons didn’t know what had hit them when we all rocked up for lunch and rearranged their tables to suit our party mood needs.  The Cornwall ladies did a sneaky little presentation to celebrate our first year as a team, so thoughtful and unexpected we were very touched.  Was such a lovely day, the early nerves soon dissolved and we were put at ease by the calming refs and lovely positive vibes CRD. Can’t wait to play them next year….they may have won this Cream Tea Battle, but not the War.

PUB QUIZ!

We are hosting a Pub Quiz at the Aggi in Braunton on 28th September with cash prize, raffle and a cake stall!

Proceeds raised will be shared between the team and North Devon Against Domestic Abuse.

Come along we'd love to see you there!

Entry is £4 per person, max 6 people per team.

The Screamers felt that it would be a good idea to organise a pub quiz as a way to raise ourselves a bit of money and our partner charity -NDADA.  The date was set and the team set about getting some pretty amazing prizes from local business and shops.

The event was advertised through Facebook and via posters in various places and also by word of mouth through work and friends.

I must admit i was a bit worried that no-one would turn up and on the day the omens were not good - i attempted three lots of cakes, one lot burned, one cake set my hair alight and the other lot (a batch of refrigerator cakes) were the only ones that were half way decent. I must stress here that i have passed my food and hygiene certificate and the quiz was quite some time ago and i have not heard of anyone experiencing any trips to A and E following eating any of them!

We duly turned up at the venue - initially there were only 4 people  there and Tony was giving me the disappointed "tut" that i am sooo used to now, questioning my organisational skills and ability to advertise properly.

However it did start to fill up and soon the place was packed.  There was a really good turnout and it turned out to be a really enjoyable event - the feedback we got was that we should do another one (maybe next year).  The Screamers turned out and everyone did their bit, we ran out of raffle tickets but that did not matter and the cakes went (even mine).

Jerry's mum and dad really kindly offered to do the pub quiz - as they are pretty professional in this department and the Agricultural Inn let us have their skittle Alley free of charge.

No Screamers event would be the same without cake - so we decided to have a bit of a cake sale alongside the quiz and the raffle.

There was a big thank you to Jerrys mum and dad who were brilliant and really kept the whole thing moving and to all of the lovely team who helped out and turned up on the day, we made a really surprising amount of money which was shared with NDADA who came to our Tuesday skate session for a photo with Coxy -  el Capitan! handing over the cheque.

South West Team Up! Screamer Join Plymouth B vs Bath Roller Girls August 31st 2013

Southwest Team up!
31st August 2013 Screamers join Plymouth B vs Bath Roller Girls

Ok so we get the message on Facebook that our Derby Crush team need our help to boost their numbers for a closed scrim with our other favourite team Bath Roller Girls (our sisters from another mother).

Michelle (Rolls-Moyse), Catharine (K-tea Claws) & Kim (Kimi Krusher) took up the challenge and headed to Bristol early in the morning to meet up with the Plymouth B team, after a detour Screamer style and nearly going to the wrong venue we arrived safely a little nervous and asking ourselves “what the hell are we doing” but also a little excited and happy to see both teams, Hugs all round.

First the awesome PetraBomb put on an amazing warm up session then it was game time. The whistle blow to start the first jam! Surprisingly all was calm, Rufus Pound amazing Bench Coach had everything under control, groups set out in order of play, I remember one person saying if you squint your eyes slightly the Bath Girls look like Minions! That was it! You know the song! Every time I stood at the line up P.O.T.A.T.O………

We Screamers learnt so much from skating with Plymouth B team & especially Dre-Feelgood, We would like to thank Plymouth B for inviting us to skate with you and if you ever need us again just give us a shout

Rapscallions & CRD - Away - Training session & Mixed Scrim - 3rd August 2013

Rapscallions & CRD - Away - Training Session & Mixed Scrim

After meeting up at the leisure centre with some of the Bath girls (who were a little worse for wear) and hauling kit into the mini bus we set off  on the long journey to Penzance - we hit difficulties in Bideford just 10 miles away following Jerrys directions which we luckily ignored and listened to Catherine instead!

We made fairly good progress along the Atlantic Highway - stopping on one occasion for a vomit break and another for a shopping trip/ snack stop somewhere in Cornwall.  There was much hilarity about being in "Bush" or "Bushy" cant remember which but it is just before Bude and there were a few attempts by Tony to injure us before we had even started. The venue was a temporary blow up structure over tennis courts and it was really hot inside, it was  hot out but even moreso inside. The surface was also something we were not used to - it was really grippy which was good for some people but it was really difficult to do any stopping - you either could not stop or stopped dead!
After meeting our hosts we did an hour of warm ups and drills which were really good and then we started our scrim.  The flooring was a challenge to us - but we did our best, we puffed and sweated and tried our best but sadly we did not win, however it was a brilliant game and everyone enjoyed it.  The penalty box got destroyed on one occasion due to an inability to stop but other than that there were no major mishaps. I was got lead jammer at the ends  and scored 5 points - something that possibly will never happen again and Tony says was a fluke - but there you go!  The Bath girls played valiantly and were invaluable to the team.

Afterwards we went down to the sea front where some of us - namely  Su - braved the sea for a dip and some fish and chips and then we wound our way merrily home, tired but happy!!!
